Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pharmacist-prescribed birth control? +
New Jersey rules allow qualified, specially trained pharmacists to furnish self-administered hormonal contraceptives directly to patients — without a prescription from a doctor. At Sparta Pharmacy, this means you can book an appointment, meet with our pharmacist, and start your birth control the same day.
Do I need to see a doctor first? +
No. Our pharmacist is authorized to evaluate you and furnish these products directly, following a standardized state health screening process — no separate doctor’s visit required.
What happens during my appointment? +
Our pharmacist will walk you through a health screening questionnaire and a quick blood pressure check to confirm you’re eligible. This includes a series of questions related to your medical history, current contraceptive use, history of smoking, and pregnancy screening. If you are eligible, the pharmacist will go over your options with you one-on-one and help you choose the method that fits your needs.
What birth control methods are available? +
  • Combined oral contraceptive pills
  • Progestin-only pills
  • Hormonal vaginal rings
  • Hormonal contraceptive patches
  • Self-administered injectable contraceptives
How much birth control will I receive? +
If you’re eligible, we can provide an initial supply of up to three months, with refills available for up to nine additional months.
Is this service safe? +
Yes. Pharmacist-furnished contraception has a strong safety record, and our pharmacists complete dedicated state-required training on patient screening, contraceptive selection, and counseling before offering this service.
How much does this service cost and what’s included? +
Assessment: $30 for an initial assessment with one of our licensed pharmacists without insurance. Assessment costs may be covered by insurance; copays may apply.

Prescription Contraceptives: May be available at no cost through insurance.

We accept most major insurance plans. Bring your insurance card to your appointment and we’ll check your coverage before you leave.

Is there an age requirement? +
New Jersey’s standing order doesn’t specify an age requirement for this service. Every patient, regardless of age, completes the same health screening to confirm the method is appropriate for them. If you have questions about eligibility, give us a call and we’re happy to talk it through.
What should I bring to my appointment? +
A photo ID, your insurance card, and a list of any current medications or health conditions you’d like to discuss with the pharmacist.
What if I don’t have a primary care doctor? +
That’s okay. If you don’t have one, our pharmacist will refer you to a nearby clinic for ongoing primary and contraceptive care as part of your visit — this doesn’t prevent you from getting your contraceptive that same day.
Is my visit private and confidential? +
Yes. Your appointment is a private, one-on-one consultation, and your health information is protected the same way it would be at any medical visit.
How do I book an appointment? +
Schedule online anytime at spartarx.com, or call us at 973.512.3131.
